2011 Backpack Historian Field experience, The American West

Fourteen AOTWS Teacher Scholars traveled to Colorado to participate in the 2011 Backpack Historian Field Experience, The American West ­ from the West.

Each day teachers explored significant spaces and places that traced the evolution and growth of the American West from the colonial period to the modern era. The themes, scholars, and sites that the teachers worked with included:

Day 1 ­ A Long Look at the West with Dr. Fred Anderson (University of Colorado ­ Boulder) and Mary Ann McNair (Colorado Historical Society). Site visits included The Fort, the Denver Public Library and Western History Collection

Day 2 ­ The Contested Plains with Dr. Elliott West (University of Arkansas). Site visits in Boulder.

Day 3 ­The Creation of the Conservation Movement and National Parks with Elliott West. Site visits included the Rocky Mountain National Park.

Day 4 ­ The Mines and Railroads of the New Frontier with Dr. Will Thomas (University of Nebraska ­ Lincoln and Dr. Thomas Andrews, University of Colorado - Boulder). Site visits included in Mollie Katherine Gold Mine and Cripple Creek railroad.

Day 5 ­ The Tourist West and 20th Century Ski Industry with Dr. Duke Richey (McCallie School). Site visits included Aspen.

This experience marked the culmination of a year of immersive professional development in which each Teacher Scholars participated in interactive lectures, hands-on workshops, and research and curriculum design
